Scholarships

The commitment to study is often an expensive and lengthy one.

The Australian Government, higher education institutions and independent organisations fund a number of scholarships, fellowships and bursaries offering various levels of financial assistance to current and prospective students.

The level of financial assistance provided by these scholarships can range from assistance with rent to the funding of a whole degree.

The criteria for students applying for these scholarships is varied but will often be based on academic achievement, leadership skills and financial need, with a number of Government funded scholarships being allocated to students from low-income backgrounds. Individual institutions determine their own selection and allocation processes.

The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) website has an extensive listing of government scholarships and information regarding postgraduate and research scholarships: http://www.dest.gov.au/highered/scholarships.htm#cls .

A limited number of scholarships are available to overseas students wishing to study in Australia. Further information regarding these can be found on the Studies in Australia website: www.studiesinaustralia.com .

Up-to-date information regarding student funding through government and private institutions, universities and independent organisations can be found on the individual universities' websites.

Students currently receiving assistance through Centrelink should be aware that some scholarships may impact on their entitlements. For further advice please contact your nearest Centrelink office: www.centrelink.gov.au .
